Nigeria petrol relief: NNPC offers 30-day discount amid rising costs

The Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) Limited has implemented a 30-day petrol price discount, offering fuel at N1,350 per litre at designated stations. The company clarified that this is a temporary customer relief initiative intended to cushion the impact of rising global crude prices and is not a return to the national fuel subsidy regime. The discount is funded by NNPC Retail forgoing its profit margins rather than using public funds.

Despite the relief, motorists have raised concerns regarding accessibility, noting that the discounted rate is primarily available to those using the NNPC mobile application. Many citizens have expressed doubt about the long-term effectiveness of a 30-day measure in addressing the broader cost-of-living crisis, including rising food and transportation costs.

Simultaneously, diesel prices continue to face upward pressure. UNCTAD reported that Nigeria experienced the world’s steepest diesel price increase of 82.7 per cent between February and August 2026. The Dangote Refinery also recently adjusted its diesel price upward to N1,800 per litre, though it remains lower than some depot rates.
