African nations face fuel price volatility amid global energy shifts

African nations are experiencing significant fuel price volatility driven by geopolitical tensions in the Middle East and global energy market shifts.

In Nigeria, the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC) introduced a ₦66-per-litre petrol discount through October 2026 to mark its 66th Independence Anniversary. While groups like the Coalition for Good Governance have welcomed the measure as a vital cushion, others have raised concerns regarding its accessibility, noting that the discount often requires the use of the NNPC Fuel App. The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has advised the Nigerian government against returning to broad petrol subsidies, suggesting instead that targeted social safety nets be used to protect vulnerable populations.

In Kenya, the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA) announced sharp increases in fuel costs, with super petrol rising by Sh12.93 and kerosene by Sh28.49 per litre. These hikes are attributed to rising import costs and disruptions in international shipping routes, such as the Bab al-Mandab Strait.

Meanwhile, Ghana's National Petroleum Authority (NPA) has established new minimum ex-pump price floors for the second half of October, setting diesel at GH¢17.09 and petrol at GH¢16.09 per litre.
