NOAA ends support for annual Arctic Report Card

The Trump administration has withdrawn federal support for the Arctic Report Card, an annual peer-reviewed publication produced by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) since 2006.

While NOAA will no longer facilitate the coordination of the 2026 report, the agency stated that its scientists and programs will continue to collect climate data. This data will remain publicly available. Other NOAA programs will maintain research contributing to weather prediction, national security, and the economic vitality of coastal communities.

The report card tracks critical environmental changes in the Arctic, including sea ice thickness, air temperature, glacial melt, and marine productivity. The University of Alaska Fairbanks serves as a major contributor to the report, which has historically included research from various Alaska-based institutions and Indigenous knowledge.
