NOAA issues G2 storm watch for potential northern lights visibility

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) has issued a moderate G2 geomagnetic storm watch. This follows a series of solar eruptions, including an M-class solar flare from sunspot region AR4549, which triggered four coronal mass ejections (CMEs) heading toward Earth.

Space weather physicists indicate that these ejections may interact during transit. Specifically, a faster-moving eruption from October 8 may catch up to earlier material, potentially complicating the timing and strength of the resulting storm.

Depending on how the solar wind interacts with Earth’s magnetic field, the northern lights could be visible across as many as 28 US states. Skywatchers are advised to seek clear, dark skies for the best viewing opportunities.
