Nobel Peace Prize committee may face political pressure from Donald Trump

Experts suggest that U.S. President Donald Trump is unlikely to win this year’s Nobel Peace Prize due to the ongoing conflict with Iran. However, the five-member committee may still feel his political influence during the selection process.

Analysts point to the precedent set by last year’s winner, Venezuelan Maria Corina Machado. Following intense lobbying by Trump, Machado later presented her medal to him in an attempt to secure support for democracy in Venezuela. This event has reportedly made the committee cautious about whether awarding the prize to certain figures might expose them to political pressure from the U.S. administration.

Potential candidates or entities under scrutiny include Pope Leo XIV, the International Court of Justice, and UN Special Rapporteur Francesca Albanese. While the Pope’s humanitarian work and calls for dialogue are noted, Trump has criticized him as ‘weak’ for opposing the conflict with Iran. Similarly, Albanese faces pressure from the U.S. and Israel due to her critiques of military actions in Gaza and the West Bank. The winner will be announced on October 9.
