Anne Carson awarded 2026 Nobel Prize in Literature

The Swedish Academy has awarded the 2026 Nobel Prize in Literature to Canadian poet, essayist, and translator Anne Carson. The Academy honored her for her “bold and inventive” body of work that bridges ancient Greek classical traditions with contemporary literary forms.

Carson, 76, is the 19th woman to receive the prize in its 123-year history. Her career is noted for its genre-defying approach, blending philological study with poetic exploration. Key works cited include her translations of Sappho, Sophocles, and Euripides, as well as original collections such as “Eros the Bittersweet” and “Wrong Norma.”

At the time of the announcement, Carson was residing in Iceland. She expressed a desire to use the prize money to support charitable causes, including helping a friend with housing and contributing to Doctors Without Borders.
