Nobel Prize announcements begin with focus on Literature and Medicine
The Nobel Prize announcements begin this Monday, starting with the Nobel Prize in Medicine. In Portugal, significant attention is focused on the Literature category, where writer Gonçalo M. Tavares is considered a potential winner. If successful, Tavares would become the second Portuguese author to receive the honor, following José Saramago in 1998.
Tavares faces strong international competition, including favorite Can Xue from China, as well as Anne Carson from Canada and Gerald Murnane from Australia. Portuguese representation is also noted in the Medicine category, as Luso-Swedish neurobiologist Gonçalo Castelo-Branco is a member of the Nobel Committee for Medicine.
Regarding the Nobel Peace Prize, the Norwegian Nobel Committee reported 287 nominees (208 individuals and 79 organizations) for this edition, which is 51 fewer than last year. Despite the decrease, the committee noted that the high number of candidates reflects “strong global interest and the current context of international tensions.”
