Nobel Prize in Medicine awarded to optogenetics pioneers

Karl Deisseroth, Peter Hegemann, and Georg Nagel have been awarded the 2026 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for their pioneering work in optogenetics. This technology uses light-sensitive proteins, originally discovered in algae, to control specific neurons with millisecond precision.

Optogenetics is transitioning from a laboratory tool to a clinical reality. One gene therapy for vision restoration is currently under FDA review, and international studies have demonstrated that optogenetic therapy can safely restore certain aspects of vision in patients with advanced retinitis pigmentosa.

Beyond vision, the technology offers significant potential for treating various neurological and psychiatric conditions. Researchers are exploring its use for Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, and epilepsy. Additionally, optogenetics is being investigated as a method to design interventions to suppress cravings associated with alcohol, tobacco, drug, and gambling addictions.
