Nobel Prize in Medicine awarded for optogenetics research
The Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine has been awarded to Peter Hegemann of Humboldt University Berlin, Georg Nagel of the University of Würzburg, and US researcher Karl Deisseroth for their pioneering work in optogenetics.
Optogenetics is a method where cells are genetically modified to respond to light. This allows researchers to precisely turn the activity of individual cells, particularly neurons, on and off. This breakthrough provides significant insights into the functioning of the human brain and the nervous system and is currently utilized in laboratories worldwide.
