Nobel Prize in Medicine awarded to optogenetics pioneers
The 2026 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine has been awarded to Karl Deisseroth, Peter Hegemann, and Georg Nagel for their pioneering work in optogenetics. The Nobel Assembly at the Karolinska Institutet recognized the trio “for their discoveries concerning light-gated ion channels and optogenetics.”
This technique allows scientists to control specific neurons using light, providing a way to map and manipulate neural circuits with high precision. The foundation of this work began with Hegemann and Nagel, who identified the light-sensitive protein channelrhodopsin in a unicellular alga. Deisseroth subsequently developed the method to apply this protein to nerve cells, enabling researchers to activate or silence specific neurons using light pulses.
Optogenetics has fundamentally transformed neuroscience by allowing researchers to observe how particular cells influence behaviors, memories, and emotions. The method is also being applied clinically, such as in efforts to restore sight in patients with certain retinal conditions.
