Nobel Prize in Medicine awarded to scientists for optogenetics discoveries

The 2026 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine has been awarded to Karl Deisseroth, Peter Hegemann, and Georg Nagel for their groundbreaking discoveries in optogenetics and light-gated ion channels.

Researchers Hegemann and Nagel identified a specific light-sensitive protein called channelrhodopsin in the algae Chlamydomonas reinhardtii. Karl Deisseroth subsequently developed a method to use this protein as a light-controlled switch to regulate neurons within the brains of living organisms.

This technology, known as optogenetics, allows scientists to activate or inhibit specific neural circuits using light. This capability provides a powerful tool for studying how neural networks influence memory, emotion, and behavior. Clinical applications are currently being explored to treat neurological disorders and potentially restore vision in patients with retinal degeneration.
