Nobel Prizes 2025 awarded for quantum physics and MOF chemistry
The 2025 Nobel Prizes in Physics and Chemistry have been awarded for breakthroughs in quantum mechanics and material science.
In Physics, professors John Clarke, Michel H. Devoret, and John M. Martinis were honored for demonstrating quantum phenomena at a macroscopic scale. Through experiments with superconducting electric circuits, they proved that quantum mechanical tunneling and energy level quantization can occur in systems large enough to be seen, bridging the gap between the microscopic and macroscopic worlds.
In Chemistry, the prize was awarded to professors S. Kitagawa, R. Robson, and O. M. Yaghimu for the development of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs). These highly porous materials possess immense surface areas relative to their volume. MOFs enable the sorption of various molecules from air or liquid phases, offering significant potential for gas storage, catalysis, and selective molecule capture, such as water purification.
