Nobel Prizes highlight scientific breakthroughs and gender gaps

The 2024 Nobel Prize announcements highlight both groundbreaking scientific achievements and ongoing gender disparities in prestigious academic recognition. In the field of physiology or medicine, the prize was awarded for contributions to optogenetics, a technology that uses light to precisely activate or deactivate specific neurons to study behavior. Neuroscientist Abdel El Manira of the Karolinska Institute described the technology as a long-sought ‘neuronal switch’ that allows researchers to link neural circuits to specific actions.

However, the awards also underscore a persistent gender gap in science. Historian Hélène Gispert notes that women remain significantly underrepresented among Nobel laureates. Since 1901, only 68 of nearly 990 laureates have been women. Data from the last five years shows that in the categories of medicine, physics, and chemistry, 29 men were honored compared to only six women. The field of economics shows even sharper disparities, with ten men recognized against only one woman.
