Noble Carbon develops smart breakers to reduce EV charger installation costs
Noble Carbon has developed smart circuit breakers designed to facilitate the installation of high-power appliances, such as electric vehicle (EV) chargers, heat pumps, and induction stoves, without requiring expensive residential electrical panel upgrades.
The company’s first product, the Noble Carbon Neon, uses dynamic load balancing to manage electricity use in real time. By adjusting power to the three to six largest electrical loads when demand peaks, the system ensures the home stays within its existing panel capacity. This approach aims to reduce the significant costs associated with home electrification, as electrical upgrades can sometimes more than double the total cost of an EV charger installation.
Developed by co-founders Jared Lebos and Andrew Crane, the breakers are designed to fit into existing residential panel slots and can be installed in less than five minutes. The technology is currently undergoing evaluation for UL certification, and the company is working with the utility provider Eversource for testing in Massachusetts.
