Nocturnal light exposure linked to increased stroke and heart attack risk
A study published in JAMA Network Open has found that exposure to light during the night, specifically between midnight and 6 a.m., is linked to a significant increase in cardiovascular risks.
Following nearly 89,000 adults for over nine years, researchers observed that higher levels of nocturnal light exposure can increase the risk of heart attack or stroke by as much as 56%. The study suggests that artificial light disrupts the circadian rhythm, the body's internal biological clock, by misleading the brain into perceiving it is still daytime.
Medical experts, including cardiologist Dr. Jeremy Slivnick and Yale professor Dr. Ehimen Aneni, note that such disruptions can impair sleep quality and trigger the body's stress response, placing additional strain on the heart.
