Noel Tata Announces Tata Trusts Plan to Build 40‑50 Hospitals and a New University

Noel Tata, chairman of Tata Trusts, outlined a new vision for the philanthropic organisation at the IIM Bangalore Global Leadership Conclave. The Trust will shift from project funding to creating lasting institutions, beginning with a plan to establish 40‑50 not‑for‑profit general hospitals across India. The hospitals will use a cross‑subsidy model where paying patients help finance care for economically weaker sections, building on a partnership with the Assam government that already delivered 17 cancer‑care hospitals.

Education is the second priority. Tata announced the creation of an undergraduate institution in partnership with the Indian Institute of Management Bangalore and called for more world‑class universities to retain Indian talent. He urged reforms to encourage private investment in higher education and stressed that philanthropic organisations must demonstrate measurable outcomes. “The founders left their shares in the companies to the Trusts with one message – do good for India,” Tata said.
