Tata Sons leadership transition begins as Chandrasekaran announces exit

Natarajan Chandrasekaran has announced he will not seek a third term as chairman of Tata Sons, the holding company for India’s largest conglomerate. His current term is set to conclude on February 20, 2027. Following this announcement, Tata Trusts Chairman Noel Tata reportedly met with Darius Khambata and Deepak Parekh to discuss the group’s leadership succession.

The leadership transition comes amid reports of boardroom tensions and discussions regarding the group’s future structure. Additionally, the adjournment of the Tata Sons Annual General Meeting due to a lack of quorum is expected to delay a dividend payment of approximately Rs 2,900 crore to the Sir Ratan Tata Trust and the Sir Dorabji Tata Trust.

In a separate development, IIM Bangalore and Tata Trusts have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to establish the Dorabji Tata School of Undergraduate Studies. The partnership includes philanthropic support from Tata Trusts to develop academic infrastructure, with the first undergraduate cohort expected to begin classes on August 31, 2026.
