Noel Tata to step down from six Tata Group boards
Noel Tata, chairman of Tata Trusts, will step down from the boards of six major Tata Group operating companies on November 12, marking his 70th birthday. This transition follows the conglomerate’s internal governance policy, which mandates retirement for non-executive directors at age 70.
Tata currently holds leadership roles including non-executive chairman of Trent, Voltas, Tata Investment Corporation, and Tata International, as well as vice-chairman positions at Tata Steel and Titan Company. While exiting these operating boards, he will retain his position as a nominee director for Tata Trusts on the board of Tata Sons, the group’s primary holding company. He will also continue his role at Trent Hypermarket Ltd, a joint venture with Tesco.
The leadership shift occurs amid reported governance tensions within the group. Specifically, disagreements have emerged regarding the proposed extension of Tata Sons Chairman N. Chandrasekaran’s term for an additional five years. While the Tata Sons board approved the proposal, Noel Tata has reportedly opposed the decision, raising questions regarding the company’s Articles of Association and the validity of the appointment process.
