Nogales man arrested for monitoring police patrols

A 19-year-old man, Jesús Iván ‘N’, has been detained in Nogales, Sonora, for allegedly engaging in ‘halconeo’—the practice of monitoring and reporting police movements. During a routine patrol in the 5 de Mayo neighborhood on August 25, authorities observed the suspect using a radio transmitter to communicate the location and trajectory of State Public Security Police units.

Upon noticing the police, the suspect attempted to flee on foot but was apprehended near the Álvaro Obregón Avenue roundabout. Officers seized a black and red portable radio, which was reportedly being used to alert third parties to patrol presence. A judge has validated the arrest and ordered the defendant to remain in preventive detention during his trial for crimes against public security.
