Nogata City to host children's sumo workshop with active wrestlers

The Nogata City Board of Education has announced a ‘Children’s Sumo Workshop’ to introduce local elementary school students to the traditional Japanese sport of sumo. Scheduled for October 25, 2026, at the Musashigawa stable located within Taga Shrine, the event aims to promote physical activity and respect for traditional culture.

Active sumo wrestlers from the Musashigawa stable will serve as instructors, teaching fundamental movements such as shiko (leg stomps) and suriashi (sliding feet), as well as proper etiquette. The workshop will also include a tasting of chanko, a traditional sumo stew. The event is free for up to 30 local residents and aims to provide children with a direct connection to the sport and its cultural values.
