Nogoyá Convent: Former nun describes systemic abuse and torture

Former Carmelite nun Evelyn Garay has spoken out regarding the systemic abuse and torture experienced at the Nogoyá Convent in Argentina. The revelations follow the judicial condemnation of the convent's former mother superior, Luisa Toledo, for the crime of “unlawful deprivation of liberty.”

Garay described the environment as a sect that caused the destruction of individual personalities through forced silence, isolation, and the use of self-mortification instruments such as whips and cilices. She noted that while physical pain was significant, the psychological damage and the loss of voice and thought were the most enduring wounds.

Garay further alleged that Archbishop Juan Alberto Puiggari was aware of the situation occurring within the convent. While Toledo has since moved to another convent, survivors continue to deal with the lasting psychological impact of their experiences.
