Argentina Chamber of Deputies fails to reach quorum for DNU 70/23 debate
The Argentine Chamber of Deputies failed to open a special session intended to debate the repeal of Decree 70/23, a major deregulation tool used by President Javier Milei. Opposition blocs, including Peronism and the Left, gathered 121 deputies, falling eight short of the 129 required to reach a quorum.
The failure to debate the decree also prevented the consideration of two other sensitive legislative items: the extension of the national disability emergency and a project addressing family debt relief. The session's collapse was largely attributed to the absence of legislators aligned with provincial governors who maintain ties with the Milei administration.
Key absences included representatives from Tucumán, Santa Fe, Córdoba, Jujuy, and Salta. While the opposition failed to block the decree, they have signaled a shift in strategy, aiming to prioritize the disability and debt relief projects in a subsequent session scheduled for October 21.
