Puglia task force captures female wolf near Noicattaro
An inter-institutional task force coordinated by the Prefecture of Bari has captured a female wolf in the countryside between Noicattaro and Rutigliano. The animal, which is believed to belong to a pack frequenting the area, has been transferred to the Bitetto wildlife observatory for monitoring and biological testing.
The capture follows a series of aggressive incidents involving children in the region during August. While the captured female is suspected to be part of the local pack, local officials, including the Mayor of Noicattaro, have noted that genetic testing is required to determine if this specific individual was responsible for the previous attacks, as DNA evidence from a prior incident identified a young male as the aggressor.
The monitoring operation, which has been active since August 5, utilizes drones, camera traps, and biological sampling to track animal movements and ensure public safety. The task force includes representatives from the Puglia Region, the Municipality of Noicattaro, the Carabinieri, and various veterinary and scientific institutions.
