Noicattaro wolf attacks confirmed by DNA analysis

DNA analysis has confirmed that a young Apennine wolf is responsible for an attack on a six-year-old child in Noicattaro, Puglia, on August 15. The genetic results were obtained from biological traces found on the child's clothing by zooprophylactic institutes in Foggia and Grosseto.

A task force coordinated by the Prefecture of Bari has identified at least three wolf specimens in the area via camera traps. Regional Agriculture Councilor Francesco Paolicelli stated that while the presence of wolves is not inherently a problem, authorities are focusing on the specific individual that exhibited anomalous behavior by attacking a child.

Efforts to monitor and capture the animal have been hampered by the theft of essential equipment, including a camera trap and capture tools belonging to the National Park of Pollino and the Police. Officials have denounced the theft as a grave act that threatens public safety and the welfare of the animal, but confirmed that operations will continue as equipment is being replaced.
