Nokia to cut 1,600 jobs and close China R&D unit

Nokia is closing its research and development unit in Hangzhou, China, resulting in approximately 1,600 job cuts. The unit, which focuses on radio technology development, is expected to cease operations by the end of 2026.

The company stated that its business in China has been steadily contracting in recent years and it is adjusting its scale to match this reality. This move follows Nokia's earlier efforts to integrate its Nokia Shanghai Bell joint venture into its global operating model.

Nokia's revenue in China fell by 19 percent last year to 913 million euros, with the region accounting for roughly 4.6 percent of the company's total revenue. The company has also been implementing cost-saving measures, which may include potential personnel reductions in Europe.
