Christopher Nolan's Epic Film 'The Odyssey' Sparks Casting and Technology Debate

Christopher Nolan’s upcoming film *The Odyssey* is slated for a worldwide theatrical release in mid‑July 2026 (July 16‑17, depending on market). The star‑studded cast includes Matt Damon, Tom Holland, Robert Pattinson, Zendaya, Anne Hathaway, Charlize Theron, Lupita Nyong’o, Elliot Page and others.

The production has pushed technical limits by shooting the entire movie with newly‑designed IMAX cameras and a custom blimp to reduce noise, fulfilling Nolan’s long‑standing ambition to film a full feature in IMAX. The budget is reported at about $250 million, making it one of the director’s most expensive projects.

Even before any screening, the film has generated controversy. Critics have questioned the casting of trans actor Elliot Page, the inclusion of Lupita Nyong’o as Helen of Troy, and the lack of Greek actors. Some commentators also balked at the use of modern American accents and a casual line (“dad’s coming home”) in the dialogue. Classical scholar Emily Wilson defended these choices, noting that translations inevitably adapt language and that contemporary casting can reflect the story’s universal themes.

Behind‑the‑scenes videos show actors describing the massive IMAX rig as “like shooting with an SUV,” highlighting the logistical challenges Nolan overcame. The film is positioned as a potential blockbuster and a prestige event, with early box‑office forecasts ranging from $80 million to $100 million opening weekend.
