Noli, Italy, features history as a former independent republic

The Italian town of Noli, located in the Liguria region on the Riviera di Ponente, holds a unique historical legacy. Between 1192 and 1797, Noli functioned as an independent maritime republic with its own governing authorities. The town's economy was historically driven by fishing, trade, and navigation, aided by its strategic position within a sheltered bay on the Ligurian Sea.

In 1202, the republic established an alliance with Genoa, which provided protection from the more powerful neighbor. Today, Noli is recognized as a tourist destination characterized by its medieval architecture, narrow streets, and coastal views.
