Nomadic herders begin seasonal migration from Van and Bitlis to Siirt

Nomadic herders in Turkey have begun their seasonal migration from the cool highlands of Van and Bitlis toward Siirt as temperatures drop. After spending approximately six months in the highlands during the summer, families are traveling with thousands of small livestock to return to the Southeast Anatolia Region.

The journey involves navigating both asphalt roads and rural terrain, with families taking two to three breaks daily to care for their animals. During the trek, herders continue to milk the livestock, producing milk, yogurt, and cheese to meet family needs and generate supplemental income through sales.

Participants in the migration, such as Mehmet Seyhan, noted that the process is a vital part of the regional agricultural and livestock economy. The arduous journey is expected to continue through the autumn, with the groups projected to reach Siirt by late December.
