Nondegree credentials can boost worker earnings

Research from the U.S. Census Bureau indicates that nondegree credentials (NDCs), such as professional certifications and licenses, can significantly increase earnings. NDC holders saw median earnings 16% higher than workers at the same level who lacked such credentials, a benefit particularly notable for those without college degrees.

These credentials, which include vocational and educational certificates from technical colleges or trade schools, signal specific competencies to employers. As some companies move away from requiring college degrees, career advisers are increasingly directing job seekers toward these alternatives to demonstrate job-specific skills in fields ranging from healthcare to food service.

Certifications and licenses can be issued by various entities, including professional boards like the American Nurses Association or private companies such as Google. Unlike many degrees, these credentials often require periodic renewal to remain valid.
