Nonna Maxxing trend embraces Italian grandmother lifestyle

A new social media trend known as ‘Nonna Maxxing’ is gaining popularity on platforms like TikTok and Instagram, particularly among young women. The trend involves adopting the lifestyle of an Italian grandmother (a ‘Nonna’), emphasizing activities such as gardening, cooking from scratch, reading, knitting, and prioritizing relaxation over career or social pressure.

Friederike Herrmann, a professor of journalism and communication sciences, describes the trend as a counter-movement to the pressures of self-optimization and constant visibility on social media. It reflects a longing for a simpler, less alienated life as an alternative to modern capitalism and performance-driven societies.

In Rome, 78-year-old Rosella Mercuri, known as ‘Nonna Rosi’, participates in the trend by hosting pasta-making classes for tourists. However, Mercuri notes that the romanticized ‘Dolce Vita’ often masks a history of intense labor. She shared that her own life involved working many jobs, often exceeding twelve hours a day, from harvesting crops to working in fruit and mushroom shops.
