Nonneseter Monastery excavation underway in Bergen

Archaeologists from the Norwegian Institute for Cultural Heritage Research (NIKU) are excavating the former choir of the medieval Nonneseter Monastery in Bergen, Norway. The site, likely established as a Benedictine convent in the first half of the 12th century, was once one of the most prestigious locations for burials during the Middle Ages.

The investigation is part of an urban redevelopment project led by Bergen Municipality and Vestland County Council. The project aims to transform the area around the Nonneseter light rail stop into a new public space, making the surviving medieval structures more prominent within the modern streetscape.

Previous excavations in the vicinity uncovered approximately 30 graves, and researchers hope to find further burials, artifacts, and evidence of daily life within the religious community. Past finds have included decorated floor fragments, coins, gaming pieces, and writing tools. Recent discoveries also include a miniature iron toy from a later historical period, illustrating the continuous occupation of the area.
