Nonprofit sector turns to AI agents and multi‑year funding to meet growing demand

Non‑profit organizations are confronting a surge in demand for services alongside staffing shortages, limited budgets and growing burnout. A 2026 report by the Center for Effective Philanthropy notes that 73 % of nonprofits reported increased program demand, while funding has stalled.

To ease operational strain, some nonprofits are exploring AI agents that allow staff to interact with case‑management systems using plain language, automating tasks such as eligibility checks, appointment scheduling and referral creation. This conversational interface aims to shift staff time from data entry back to client‑focused work.

At the same time, leaders are calling for multi‑year flexible funding to provide predictable resources for essential costs, including technology upgrades and living‑wage salaries. Vancouver Foundation’s Lighthouse Organization’s Fund granted Archway Community Services a multi‑year flexible award, enabling the organization to plan long‑term, strengthen governance and keep critical services open in the Fraser Valley.
