Nonprofits face funding gaps and philanthropic disparities

Nonprofit leaders are reporting increased difficulty in securing emergency support from philanthropic foundations as public funding for social safety nets declines. Many organizations face a culture of silence or vague responses from donors, often attributed to philanthropic foundations navigating an uncertain political and policy environment.

There are significant disparities in how funding is distributed, particularly regarding racial equity. Estimates suggest only 1.8 percent of philanthropic dollars nationwide go to Black-led organizations. While there was a surge in commitments following 2020, much of that support consisted of one-time grants that have since expired.

Critics argue that a lack of organizational capacity is often used as a reason to deny funding to Black-led nonprofits, creating a catch-22 where organizations cannot build the necessary staff or infrastructure without the very operating budget support that philanthropies often avoid providing.
