Nonstick Cookware Safety Concerns Over PTFE and PFAS
Air fryer baskets and other nonstick cookware are commonly coated with PTFE (Teflon) or similar fluoropolymer finishes that belong to the PFAS family of “forever chemicals.” When these surfaces are overheated—typically above 500 °F—or become scratched or flaked, they can release toxic fumes that cause polymer‑fume fever, popularly called “Teflon Flu.” The condition produces temporary symptoms such as fever, chills, muscle tension and headache within 12‑24 hours of exposure.
While modern PTFE coatings are considered stable at normal cooking temperatures, health risks rise if users exceed recommended heat levels or damage the coating. PFOA, once used in PTFE production, was phased out in the United States by 2015, but many pans still contain PTFE, which remains a PFAS. Ceramic‑coated cookware is often marketed as a safer alternative, yet many ceramic products are aluminum bases with PTFE‑free but still potentially degradable nonstick layers. Consequently, safety depends more on cooking practices—using medium heat, avoiding metal utensils, and replacing worn pans—than on the “non‑toxic” label.
Manufacturers are responding with glass or ceramic air‑fryer baskets that are PFAS‑free, offering consumers options that eliminate the associated fume‑risk altogether.
