Nonthaburi durian sets world record at $48,000
In 2019, a Kanyao variety durian from Nonthaburi, Thailand, was auctioned for $48,000 at the ‘Durian King’ event, setting a record as the world’s most expensive durian. While standard durians in Thailand cost approximately $16, a standard Kanyao durian can cost around $638.
The premium quality of Nonthaburi durians is attributed to unique cultivation methods and environmental factors. Despite the proximity of the Chao Phraya River, farmers avoid using river water for irrigation, opting instead for clean tap water to ensure fruit quality. The soil is a specialized sedimentary mix enriched with Indian coral and legumes.
These durians are characterized by a mild aroma and a smooth, creamy texture, distinguishing them from more common varieties that tend to be more pungent and watery. The region has a history of durian cultivation spanning over 300 years, with farmers utilizing traditional techniques passed down through generations.
