Noor Jehan: The singer whose voice transcended the India-Pakistan border

On the occasion of her birth anniversary, the legacy of Pakistani singer and actress Noor Jehan is being celebrated for her profound impact on music in both India and Pakistan. Despite the political tensions and borders between the two nations, her voice maintained immense popularity across the subcontinent.

Before the Partition, Noor Jehan established a significant presence in the Indian film and music industry. Even after moving to Pakistan, her popularity in India remained high, with fans frequently tuning into the radio to hear her songs.

The legendary Indian singer Lata Mangeshkar was a noted admirer of Noor Jehan’s artistry, frequently praising her vocal nuances and technique. The two shared a relationship of mutual respect and professional admiration. Music director C. Ramchandra had even expressed a desire to record a duet featuring both singers at the Attari border.
