Norbert Elgert emphasizes character development in youth football
Norbert Elgert, the long-time U19 head coach at FC Schalke 04, emphasized the importance of personality development in young athletes during a recent coaching congress in Mainz. Speaking at an event hosted by the Bundes Deutscher Fußball-Lehrer, the 69-year-old stated that his role involves coaching people as much as teaching football.
Elgert highlighted that qualities such as resilience, ambition, and responsibility are just as critical as technical skills and athleticism. During his more than 30-year career at Schalke 04, he has guided over 150 players toward professional football. He noted that he only allows talents to progress to the next level once they demonstrate the necessary mental readiness and willpower.
