Norddeich Seal Station releases first young seals of the season

Three young seals, named Ernie, Tiffy, and Lucy, have been released into the North Sea at the eastern tip of the island of Juist. These are the first 'heuler' (orphaned pups) of the season to be returned to the wild by the Norddeich Seal Station.

To ensure survival, the seals underwent weeks of intensive care and preparation. Each animal had to reach a minimum weight of 25 kilograms to be considered physically stable enough for the transition to independent life in the Wadden Sea.

Station manager Peter Lienau noted that the station is currently caring for more than 100 young seals. While harsh weather conditions have contributed to the separation of pups from their mothers this year, human disturbances on beaches remain a significant factor in these occurrences. When contact between a pup and its mother is lost, state-appointed supervisors rescue the animals and transport them to the Norddeich station for professional rehabilitation.
