Nordea warns of Swedish household sensitivity to interest rate hikes
Nordea and other financial analysts are assessing the impact of interest rate trajectories on Swedish households. Nordea notes that a high proportion of Swedish households hold loans with three-month variable rates, making them particularly sensitive to rate hikes. This sensitivity could dampen consumer demand more significantly than intended if further increases occur.
While Nordea’s base forecast suggests two additional rate hikes, the bank notes that geopolitical factors, such as potential changes in the Hormuz Strait affecting energy prices, could influence inflation and subsequent central bank decisions. Riksbank Governor Erik Thedéen has indicated an expectation of approximately two and a half more rate hikes from the current position.
Additionally, there are concerns that a decline in market interest rates may not automatically translate into lower mortgage rates for consumers, as market rates have already risen more sharply than fixed residential rates.
