Norderney shipwreck marks failed 1967 rescue attempt

A rusted shipwreck at the eastern end of the island of Norderney serves as a local landmark, telling a story of a failed rescue attempt during a severe storm in 1967.

On December 3, 1967, the herring logger ‘Ministerialrat Streil’ was driven onto the Othelloplate by hurricane-force winds while traveling from Glückstadt to Emden. In an attempt to salvage the vessel, the mussel dredger ‘Pionier’ was deployed to dig a channel to deeper water. However, the ‘Pionier’ also became stuck in the sand, and a subsequent storm drove the rescue vessel onto the beach as well.

While a salvage tug successfully refloated the ‘Ministerialrat Streil’ in February, the ‘Pionier’ remained stranded, eventually becoming the permanent wreck seen on the island today.
