Nordic banking sector faces margin pressure and varying IR standards

Major banks in Norway and Denmark are navigating shifting financial landscapes characterized by intense competition and varying standards in investor relations.

In Norway, the six largest banks reported a 5 percent decline in net interest income from Q2 2025 to Q2 2026. This decrease is attributed to a drop in net interest margins, which fell by 6 basis points due to strong competition in both mortgage and corporate lending markets. To offset this pressure, banks are increasingly relying on commission income, which rose to 20 percent of total income in Q2 2026, driven largely by asset management, insurance, and real estate brokerage. While loan losses increased slightly during 2025, they remained below the 30-year average at 0.17 percent.

In Denmark, an annual IR Rating assessment of listed financial companies highlights Danske Bank and Jyske Bank as leaders, both achieving maximum scores for their investor relations practices. Other major players like Tryg and Alm. Brand followed closely, while Nordea received high marks but was noted for failing to provide quarterly analyst consensus estimates. At the lower end of the large bank category, AL Sydbank and Ringkjøbing Landbobank received lower scores.
