Nordic banks face mixed analyst outlooks amid interest rate shifts
Analysts are expressing mixed views on the performance of Nordic banks amid rising bond yields and expectations of interest rate hikes. Morgan Stanley has turned more positive on the sector, citing stronger macroeconomics, higher interest rates, increased volumes, and improved margins. In their updated analysis, Morgan Stanley gave Danske Bank an 'overweight' rating, while maintaining an 'underweight' rating for Handelsbanken.
Opinions differ regarding Nordea. While Morgan Stanley maintains a neutral stance, SEB equity strategist Esbjörn Lundevall prefers Nordea due to its lower exposure to the Swedish market, which mitigates risks associated with potential increases in bank taxes.
Concurrently, Nordea forecasts that the Riksbank may implement two interest rate hikes sooner than previously expected to combat a weak Swedish krona and imported inflation. However, economists warn that households may not be prepared for further increases, as excessive hikes could stifle consumer spending.
