Nordic bishops issue pastoral letter on migration and integration

Bishops from Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Finland, and Iceland have released a joint pastoral letter titled “The Earth is Our Common Home,” addressing the challenges of migration in Europe. The document calls for a balanced approach that respects the dignity of migrants while acknowledging the practical capacities of host nations to integrate newcomers.

The hierarchy emphasizes the Christian duty to assist those in need, citing the biblical example of Jesus Christ as a migrant. They highlight that Catholic parishes in Scandinavia serve as “laboratories of integration,” where diverse cultures meet. The bishops also noted that migrants played a historical role in rebuilding the Catholic Church in the Nordic region following periods of persecution.

While advocating for mercy, the bishops urge governments to maintain realism regarding assimilation capabilities and warn against the rising use of aggressive language in public debate. They advocate for policies that prevent the isolation of newcomers and avoid forced assimilation, suggesting that migrants should respect the laws and heritage of their host countries while maintaining their own cultural identities. Furthermore, the letter opposes the deportation of well-integrated individuals who contribute significantly to society.
