Nordic Combined athletes seek Olympic reinstatement via France

Athletes and sports officials are launching an initiative to reinstate Nordic Combined to the Olympic program. Following the International Olympic Committee’s decision in July to remove the discipline, an initiative led by Olympic champion Jason Lamy Chappuis and former biathlete Martin Fourcade plans to meet with French President Emmanuel Macron in November.

As the host of the 2030 Winter Olympics, France has the opportunity to use a host-nation bonus to include an additional discipline. Horst Hüttel, sports director of the German Ski Association (DSV), noted that while this represents a chance, it remains uncertain. If the 2030 bid fails, the sport's future depends on the decision for the 2034 Games, expected in the fourth quarter of 2027.

To increase appeal for broadcasters and spectators, the International Ski Federation (FIS) is developing new competition formats. Proposed changes include sprint events with heats, more compact prologues lasting 45 to 60 minutes, and new mixed-gender competitions.
