Nordic football federations urge EU intervention regarding FIFA governance

The football federations of Sweden, Denmark, and Finland have formally requested the involvement of the European Union to address concerns regarding governance and transparency within FIFA. In a letter addressed to European Commissioner for Sport Glenn Micallef, the three Nordic leaders expressed “deep concern” over recent developments within the international governing body.

The appeal follows the controversial FIFA Forward Enterprise (FFE) project, which proposed selling private stakes in football competitions. Although the proposal was withdrawn following international pressure, the Nordic federations stated that “the doubts it raised have not disappeared.”

The leaders argue that fundamental decisions regarding the commercial future and institutions of football must not be made without sufficient democratic participation or transparency. They emphasized that football cannot demand high standards of accountability from clubs and leagues while accepting lower standards at the international leadership level, asserting that the “essence of this sport is at stake.”
