Nordic leaders clash over diplomatic contact with Vladimir Putin

A diplomatic rift has emerged among Nordic leaders regarding how Europe should engage with Russian President Vladimir Putin concerning the war in Ukraine. The tension follows a telephone conversation between Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre, Finnish President Alexander Stubb, and Putin.

Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen criticized the move, arguing that Norway and Finland acted without coordinating with other European nations, which she claims risks weakening European unity. However, this stance has drawn significant criticism from Norwegian media and Danish news outlets.

Kjetil B. Alstadheim, political editor at Aftenposten, publicly rebuked Frederiksen, suggesting Europe must play a more active role in direct dialogue with Russia rather than relying solely on US representation. Meanwhile, Danish newspapers Information and Berlingske argued that Europe must secure a seat at the negotiating table to ensure the continent's future is not decided exclusively by the US and Russia. Information characterized the recent friction as “something near a diplomatic catastrophe,” warning that such divisions could be exploited by Putin and Donald Trump.
