Nordic preparedness faces engineering shortages and infrastructure needs
Preparedness in the Nordic and Baltic regions is facing challenges related to both human expertise and physical infrastructure. A report from the Association of Nordic Engineers highlights that a critical shortage of engineering talent poses a significant risk to maintaining essential services such as electricity, water, communications, and digital infrastructure during crises like cyberattacks, sabotage, or extreme weather.
In Sweden, Mjölby Municipality has implemented a technical solution to bolster local resilience. The municipality's urban development administration has equipped its fuel station with a battery storage system, allowing essential vehicles used for snow removal, waste management, and water leak repairs to refuel even during prolonged power outages or internet disruptions. The system can be further supported by a generator if the battery is depleted.
