Nordic welfare systems support women's surgical careers

Research published in the journal Surgery suggests that Nordic welfare systems play a significant role in supporting women's career opportunities within the field of surgery. Researchers from Umeå University, the University of Helsinki, and Åbo Akademi University highlight that factors such as tuition-free education, publicly funded childcare, and shared parental leave allow women to better combine professional ambitions with family life.

Despite these structural advantages, the study notes that women remain underrepresented in specialist training and in high-level leadership positions within surgical hierarchies. The researchers argue that societal structures facilitating a more even distribution of domestic responsibilities are key to enabling both men and women to remain in demanding medical professions throughout their careers.
