Nordica Icebreaker Delivered to Canadian Arctic via Inuit-Led Partnership

Qikiqtaaluk Horizon Arctic Services, a joint venture between the Inuit‑led Qikiqtaaluk Corporation and an engineering firm from St. John’s, has chartered the Finnish polar‑class icebreaker Nordica from state‑owned operator Arctia. The vessel will provide heavy ice‑breaking and navigation support for the Canadian Coast Guard in Arctic waters during the 2026 season, expanding capacity as activity and investment in the region increase.

The partnership, the first of its kind between an Inuit organization and the Canadian Coast Guard, is described by Qikiqtaaluk Corp. President and CEO Harry Flaherty as a practical, cost‑effective way to strengthen northern maritime capability and support the growing northern economy and Arctic shipping routes.
