Nordlandssykehuset warns of serious risks due to mental health and substance abuse service cuts
Nordlandssykehuset has warned of significant budget cuts affecting mental health care and substance abuse treatment. Proposed reductions include the potential closure of geriatric psychiatry units, a decrease in available hospital beds, and a reduction in the hiring of medical specialists. Additionally, ambulance services in parts of Nordland face potential cuts.
Regional health authorities warn that these economic measures may lead to serious errors if the long-term costs to other health and care services are not considered. The hospital is also facing challenges regarding staff retention, a demanding work environment, and a reported culture of fear among employees. Costs for hiring temporary medical specialists are projected to rise from 34.1 million NOK in 2025 to 46.6 million NOK in 2026.
In related national discussions regarding the 2024 state budget, the organization Normal Norge has expressed concern that mental health and substance abuse remain priorities in theory but lack sufficient funding in practice. The group argues that the absence of a comprehensive drug reform and inadequate resources for overdose and harm reduction undermine efforts to improve quality of life for users.
